On November 4th 2008, Proposition 8 passed in California, banning same-sex marriage. Soon after, the “NOH8 Campaign” was created by photographer Adam Bouska as a form of silent protest. As part of the campaign, Bouska has taken pictures of thousands of pictures of individuals and groups with “NOH8” painted on their faces and duct tape across their mouths to represent the voices not being heard. This movement caught the attention of celebrities and politicians, including two very unexpected people: Cindy and Meghan McCain (wife and daughter of John McCain, respectively). Although all three are Republicans, Cindy and Meghan both support same-sex marriage which, according to ABC News, puts them “in stark opposition to the views of their party and at odds with the Senator himself.”
Being completely liberal, I was absolutely thrilled to read this story and not just because I agree with their stance on same-sex marriage. For them to be so close to a high-profile Republican Senator and not only admit that they don’t agree with the party’s stance on the issue, but to openly protest against it was an incredible show of courage. I understand that a politician has more to lose by taking a stance that is unpopular with their political party, but maybe some of them can learn from this display and become more independent.

I agree that it takes courage to step outside the lines of your political party, but to put your spouse's credibility in question seems somewhat treasonous to the marriage.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with same sex marriage, and I'm actually quite surprised that Sen. McCain is not for it, considering his moderate to liberal leanings.
The whole proposition 8 situation is a joke. They want to say that peoples' voices are not being heard, but they WERE heard, there was a vote, and the people spoke. They are just upset that the wrong voice, in their opinion, was the loudest.
As for Cindy and Meghan McCain, that really shows a lot of disrespect for the man in the family. What does that say about him?
I am glad that you did this blog about this issue.
ReplyDeleteThis has been a bit of a hot topic in the news lately. Especially when Cindy McCain did the advertisement. But there is a valid point that you failed to mention. That is Cindy McCain is not against same sex marriage, but she just thinks that this decision should be left up to each individual state. That might be a big difference to some, or it just takes the "point blankness" out of the issue and where she stands. Oh the twisted web we weave.
Thanks for doing an interesting blog...
You know what my problem is with this whole blog? It's not the same sex marriage. I don't have a problem with that. It's that fact that everyone thinks it's political at all.
ReplyDeleteIt's just like when Clinton got his goo all over Lewinskis dress. The govenment got involved and blew it out of proportion, just like they always do. Since when does our government have the right to tell anyone, gay, straight, or otherwise who they can and cannot love? Since when can anyone tell you who you can or cannot have consentual sex with?
I also get irritated when people use the terms liberal, republican, democrat, or any political labeling. YOU ARE NONE OF THOSE THINGS, no one is. There isn't a single person who believes all the dogma presented by any single group. If you do kill yourself now because you've lost your free will. To say that the McCain ladies are strong for "stepping away form John's beleifs" is so small minded it hurts me to even think about. They had a thought, an idea, that is different then someone elses. Holly crap, so do you when you order at McDonalds and you don't order the exact same thing as the guy ahead of you in line.
This article is a prime example of how American's have lost the ability to think for themselves. It pains me that anyone would give dignity to this. It pains me that the Californian government spent time on this when they so obviously have other concerns that should be taking up their time. It pains me even more that anyone would even take the time to vote on something that is so clearly none of their business.
I LIKE YOUR ARTICLE AND YOU ARE RIGHT THAT POLITICIANS HAVE MORE TO LOSE WHEN THEY TAKE A STANCE AND I WOULD SAY ALL OF THEM NEED TO LEARN FROM THIS ARTICLE.
